Rumor Retina-Equipped iPad Coming in Second Half of 2013

An analyst for DisplaySearch boldly predicts that Apple could be launching an iPad mini with Retina display by the second half of 2013. Based on supply chain data, Paul Semenza tells CNET that the Retina iPad mini will have a screen resolution of 2,048 x 1,536, similar to the that of the full-size iPad with Retina display.

Because of the smaller screen size, however, the iPad mini with Retina will have a richer pixel density at 324 ppi. While that sounds welcoming, it may affect the iPad mini’s thickness and weight just to accommodate the Retina display, much like what happened with the full-size iPad.

Semenza says that LG Display will most likely manufacture the Retina display for iPad mini, although he does not count out the possibility of other companies such as AU Optronics, Japan Display, and Sharp, becoming Apple’s Retina supplier.

An added Retina display could cost as much as $ 12 more than the current display, making this new iPad mini cost approximately $ 200 to make per unit.
